How to pick a colour for your own sign

The palette has 11 standard colours plus RGB. Start with the wall the sign will hang on, because the background changes how a colour reads. On dark paint, concrete or black panels, white, ice blue and lemon yellow stand out clearly. On a white or light grey wall, saturated colours such as red, pink, purple and orange keep their character, while warm white can look pale. Brick, wood and green plant walls go well with warm white and golden yellow.

Think about where people will read the sign from. Deep blue and purple look darker to the human eye than white, yellow or green on the same line, so for a name that should be legible from across the street or the room a lighter colour is the safer choice. Blue and purple work well for a logo or an accent that people see up close.

Questions we often get about colour

  • Can one sign have several colours? Yes. A common layout is the main word in one colour and an outline or small symbol in another. Two or three colours usually look tidy; more than that can make short text harder to read.
  • My brand colour is not in the palette. Send us the HEX or Pantone code and we will suggest the closest standard colour, or RGB if you need to switch between shades.
  • When does RGB make sense? When the same sign has to fit different moods: a bar that changes atmosphere during the evening, a stage, a gaming room or a shop window with seasonal themes.
  • How can I see the result before ordering? Try your text in our neon sign maker, then ask for a free visualisation. We send it together with the price within 24 hours, placed on a photo of your wall if you attach one.
